Our barony has several Awards for its members. These awards are given at the pleasure of the Baron and Baroness, but anyone can recommend a Baronial member to receive appropriate local awards. You can recommend someone for a Baronial award using this form.
Often the nature of considering someone for a Baronial award will reveal that person also to be worthy of nomination for a Kingdom award; we encourage all gentles who may be nominating a Baronial member for a kingdom award to let the Baron and Baroness know so that we may also add our voices to ensure that those who deserve to be honored, are so honored.
At the Baronial level, the awards are:
The Wastral
Given for “service beyond sanity” to those whose efforts make them standouts among our populace. These awards are usually given to active members of the barony who show remarkable effort both over time and in connection with single extraordinary events. May be awarded once. The award is a wearable token of a tipped wine cup, spilling its contents over three coins.
Solaris
Given to those who show great worth and knowledge in the various forms of Arts and Sciences. May be awarded once per art form. The award device is one of the Baronial Suns, to show that the recipient is one who lights the way in their art form.
The Eddington Cross
Given for extraordinary valor in the arts Martial, including Heavy Combat including Siege, Rapier, Youth Combat, Combat Archery, Target Archery, Thrown Weapons, and support (including Waterbearing, Marshaling and Chirurgeonate services) such that the member of the Barony receiving the honor would be recognized for their effort, courage and participation even by those not aware of their Baronial affiliation. Examples: Guilleaume, for running the Midrealm Kingdom Banner behind HRM Alaric throughout Pennsic, at great personal risk and at the sacrifice of his own fighting participation; Chevaleres Jocelyn, for serving as Pentamer General at great personal risk and sacrifice; Master Sir Trelogin Tavistock, for dogged persistence as a Midrealm Champion, surviving both heat and injury until he had to be supported from the field of battle as one of the last three Champions remaining to oppose the Eastrealm. May be awarded more than once. The award consists of a cross of any form, not necessarily the specific token given by the Baron and Baroness, worn by the recipient and avowed as their Eddington Cross.
The Chalice
The Barony’s second-highest award, given for significant and extended service over time, without which the Barony would not be the pleasant and active place it is. Often the nature of this service is such that the recipient has either held multiple offices, or has been responsible over several years for teaching, recruiting and leading Baronial activities. May be awarded once: The award is a chalice carrying the Baronial arms.
The Cupbearer
The Barony’s highest award, recognizing lives that have been dedicated to growing the Barony, the Kingdom and the SCA, and holding those who receive it in the greatest honor for their success and impact. May be awarded once. The award consists of a cup of any form, given in recognition that the person or people are held in such trust that the Baron and Baroness would accept without testing a cup from their hands, knowing that they would never poison the Barony. Cupbearers may assert their right to serve at Baronial events at the head table, should there be one, though these individuals are held in such high esteem that it is more likely they should be served.
Baron’s Favor
Given to recognize an individual or individuals who have done something significant and deserving of recognition that draws the Baron’s thanks and praise and public acclaim. Given at the pleasure (whim) of the Baron. May be awarded more than once. The award is recognition by the Baron, who may choose a particular token to bestow, and inclusion among the others in the Baron’s Favor.
Friend of my Childhood
Given by the Baroness to recognize an individual or individuals whose participation has rendered them unto a trusted “friend of my childhood” and who can absolutely be relied upon to do the right thing, often at personal sacrifice, to sustain the Barony in the manner the Baroness believes to demonstrate her own concern for the health of the group. May be awarded once. The award is recognition by the Baroness, who may choose a particular token to bestow, and inclusion among the other “friends” of the various childhoods of the Baronesses of Roaring Wastes.
